what does tie-dye symbolize to hippies?

Message: what was the point of tie-die in the sixties? what does it symbolize to the hippies? even though i know that it wasn't started in the sixties what did the tie- dye mean to the hippies and why did they use it and why does it know symbolize the hippies? please reply asap because i am working on a very big project that is due really soon!!
