could you explain to me what "exhaust" the dye means? Am I to understand the dye that has been mixed with vinegar becomes exhausted and then has little impact on the environment when I dump it out?

I've already tie died a shirt but I don't know how to wash it without all the dies going together. I used RIT die.
After you have done your Tie Dying do you wash it? If so how?
How do I set the colors now? Does washing with salt or vinegar help?
Now that I have tie-dyed - How would you recommend to wash the garment so that the dye does not dye the white areas of the fabric?

As long as I keep the colors separated (in the sink) they are fine, but as soon as I try to wash the shirt in the machine the black bleeds all over the yellow.
Why did my tie-dyes come out too pale?
