Dyeing yarn, thread, and unspun fiber

Dying wool blend yarn

I would like to dye a wool blend yarn, using acid dyes. I do not need the acrylic or cotton or other portion of the yarn to take the dye....just the wool.

Sooo, lets say it is acrylic, and I dye the wool using the usual wool acid dye methods.

Can I expect the acrylic to take some of the color? Will it wash out? Will it bleed out every time I wash it from then on?

What about cotton or other fibers? They should "stain" some with an acid dye, right? but will fade over time....does this mean they bleed in the water??? Anyway to help get the majority of this excess dye out of the cotton (or bamboo or rayon) without hurting the dye in the wool?

Need to discharge/bleach 100% cotton yarn to white...help I'm newb

I have this yarn apron top that when I purchased it off of the Internet I thought it was black with yellow trim -- alas when it arrived I found it to be camouflage with yellow trim.

I absolutely hate camo so I want to bleach this 100% cotton piece and then send it to one of the companies that tie-dyes for me.... Or I'd like to find someone on here that can bleach it for me since I dont really know WTH I'm doing, lol....
What would I have to use to get it to white?? thanks all!

Handpainted Embroidery Threads

Aside from dyeing embroidery threads, I would love to learn or know if anybody in this forum already did/tried handpainting threads. Is the process similar to handpainting fabric?

I would love to know your inputs as well if spray dyeing on threads is possible. Since I want my threads to have multiple colors, I assume spray dyeing is possible (but then that's an idea of a no experience dyer).

I have some interesting photos of handpainted threads that I wanna upload in this post but dunno how to.:-s

Thanks,

Lody

Cross Stitch Cotton Thread Dyeing

Hi Paula and All!

First off, I wanna thank Paula for this wonderful site. I've been reading a lot of previous posts and of course most (if not all) dyeing infos.

I'm a prolific cross stitcher and had been thinking of dyeing my own threads. Has anybody here tried that? I would love to hear your inputs. My goal is to have various colors, and variegated colors on the threads I'll gonna dye. I'm thinking of using/dyeing DMC threads... Can I dye colored cotton threads or should I just start with white? My preference in colors are earth tones and antique-tones. How can I attain that?

Thanks

Cold dyes for wool roving?

I have a friend who wants to teach kids how to dye unspun wool to make felt balls. It will be at a campout, and she doesn't want to have to boil the dyes. Is there a cold dye that will work in this case?
Thanks!

yarn dyeing

Nope, I've never dyed yarn yet. I have a number of knitting friends, and one has been bugging me about it, even gave me a book she'd bought on the subject. I told her if she wanted to skein out the yarn, I'd be more than happy to dye it. So far... she hasn't. For solid colors, I can do it in the machined skein, but for ombres it'd need to be unwound and tied, etc.

Which book did your friend give you about dyeing yarn? I have Yarns to Dye For: Creating Self-Patterning Yarns for Knitting, which my mother (an avid machine knitter) sent me, and Dyeing to Knit checked out from the library. Yarns to Dye for is about self-striping yarn, and mentions only Rit dye for cotton yarn, and Dyeing to Knit is an excellent how-to book on dyeing wool yarn with ProChem's WashFast Acid dye, but doesn't cover plant fibers at all. (I posted about Yarns to Dye for here on February 23, 2008.) Is there a book on dyeing cotton yarn, anywhere, can anyone tell me? Is there one that mentions any dye for cotton other than Rit?

Self-Striping Sock Yarn

Does anyone know how to dye skeins of yarn to make the self-striping effect as seen in the sock yarns? Or is this proprietary information? Thanks for any help,
