Mandala folds

flowery silk squares

Here are some pictures of the silks I dyed the other day. I didn't use any thickener, but I am going to try it out next time. Yes, the flowery shapes are like the sun mandala from Tie Dye 303. :)

Got it a bit purpler than I intended. I printed out a protractor on card stock and cut it out to make a 36° angle to use as a guide.

sources of info on making mandala tie-dyes

I have a web page on how to tie-dye mandalas:
Tie-dyeing Mandalas and Stars

and Kathy has posted some good photos and instructions on how to tie the Mandala fold:
Mandala Folding at the Tie-dye Wiki {link updated December 18, 2007]

Two different styles of folding Mandalas are demonstrated in the tie-dyeing DVDs. Michael Fowler's The Art of Tie-Dye shows more of the Flower style of Mandala, whereas True Tie Dye's Advanced Tie Dye Techniques: Making Shapes and Mandalas shows more star-like mandalas, as well as lotus blossums and suns.
