Dying wool blend yarn

I would like to dye a wool blend yarn, using acid dyes. I do not need the acrylic or cotton or other portion of the yarn to take the dye....just the wool.

Sooo, lets say it is acrylic, and I dye the wool using the usual wool acid dye methods.

Can I expect the acrylic to take some of the color? Will it wash out? Will it bleed out every time I wash it from then on?

What about cotton or other fibers? They should "stain" some with an acid dye, right? but will fade over time....does this mean they bleed in the water??? Anyway to help get the majority of this excess dye out of the cotton (or bamboo or rayon) without hurting the dye in the wool?

Looked all over and have not found anyone doing this particular odd thing. :)

Willing to experiment, but hate to waste a bunch of yarn and dye without some ideas first. :)

Found info for you

CDC, take a look at this link http://www.pburch.net/drupal/?q=node/607

It is in this forum under Acid Dyes and subsection Acid Dye Questions...I think it may be a big help!!

Dyeing Wool Blend Yarn

Hi cdc! I too have been thinking of dyeing yarn that is a blend of protein and cellulose fibers. Personally, I have been looking for ways to color both the fibers at the same time without damaging them.

I have not been able to find any information either. In my opinion, you should be able to wash away any free or unreacted dye with repeated washings. Beyond that, I think you may be able to use products like RetayneTM or other products that will react with free acid dyes. But if you don't get any other recommendations from people who have experience with this...and since we dont have much info on it...you will probably just have to knit and dye a few test swatches to see how they perform. If you do, please share what you learn... I'm dyeing to know (ha ha).
By the way, I just assume my spelling and gramma is incorrect and blame it on the fact I had more chemistry classes than English clases.

Good luck!

Sorry, dyeing, not dying. Although perhaps dying is more true.

:)

are we doing spell checks now
