How to fold an Awareness Ribbon

I'm trying to tie dye an Awareness Ribbon. The only way I've come up with is to baste-sew the folds together since one end doesn't stop at a fold. Any other ideas out there, or tips? I'm afraid to leave holes in the shirt from the needle/thread.

tie-dyeing a ribbon shape

Fold the shirt in half vertically, then draw the outline of half of the ribbon with a regular 2B pencil or a child's washable marker, like this:

Carefully pleat along the outline, turn at the corner, and keep going along the line until you return to the fold at the top of the design. Tie with artificial sinew or whatever you normally use for tight designs. Do the same for the inside of the ribbon, then apply the dye between the lines.

You might need to practice a bit before you get results that you like. This looks harder than dyeing a heart shape, and hearts often come out sort of lopsided the first time. Also, take a look at the tutorial for dyeing a heart at the Tie Dye Wiki, since the technique is very similar.

Here's an example of a breast cancer awareness ribbon tie-dye (click on the image to see the shirt at Amazon):

Thanks!

Wow -- thanks for the speedy reply. I hadn't thought about going all the way around the edges -- I was going to treat the ribbon as one line and dye it wide. Your way makes a lot more sense!
