"cresting wave" tie-dye design

I once saw a tie-dye design that reminded me of cresting waves - it was 2 or 3 partial spirals all facing the same direction with solid colors above and below. It was a design on a site that sold tie-dye t-shirts. I'd like to try and do it myself but I can't find the design any more (why, oh WHY didn't I bookmark it?). Can anyone point me to a picture of this design and offer any suggestions on how to do it?

Triple spiral

I'm with you! I tried this design last year, and didn't pay attention to how the colors were applied... I came out with fireworks instead of the waves! I like the design I got, it just wasn't what I was aiming for!

Thank you so much!! I knew ho

Thank you so much!! I knew how to fold it but it was the dyeing that had me stumped. I just can't visualize how spirals work yet. I wish someone would invent software that would let you fold spirals and dye them differently and then show you how they'd come out!

Anyway, I'm very excited about trying this tonight.

software

A software program would be fantastic, especially it it could calculate dye mixtures based on Procion MX dyes, and indicate fabric dampness to achieve the desired effects.

found an example

found one example - this isn't the best I've seen but this is the general idea at

under the "flame" patterns.

Has anyone done something like this and can you explain how it is done?

how to tie-dye the triple spiral

Look at this post, on the itiedye.com forum, by dancingbearmama (Nicole):

It's a good a tutorial as you could hope to find for this fold, very nice illustrations.

She used three forks to twist the spirals individually (if you fold the shirt in three before making a single spiral, the center spiral will be reversed in direction), then she applied dye so that the flame color cut across half of each spiral.

Here are some reduced-size pictures of her explanation, just to whet your appetite:

If you applied just one color on each side of an imaginary line that goes through the centers of the three tied spirals, you'd get something very much like your first description.

One color on each side...

..but don't I still need to insert some - in this case blue - between the spirals or else there won't be a spiral of blue or any other complementary color coming out of the spiral into the larger "ocean" area, right?

Which one is right?

or

one color on each side of a spiral

If you tie a spiral, and then dye half in each of two colors, so that the dividing line goes right across the center of the spiral, then, when you untwist it, you get a perfect wave shape.

I was pretty sure of this, but wanted to run a test, so I twisted up a disposable paper tissue and dipped half of it in fruit juice (about as much dyeing as I'm up to at the moment, not feeling well lately). Sure enough, when I untwisted it, there was the wave shape, in an ugly pale fruit-juice color:

My guess

What about this?

My attempt at this color layout

Hi, Jaja. I finally decided to try this color layout with a couple of minor adjustments, just to see how it came out. First, here is the folded shirt:

Then the shirt after dyeing:

Finally, the end result:

I will have to do a little more tweaking on how the colors are applied, I think. Also, I like what a recent post showed as far as not tying the shirt completely, although I'm not sure I know how I would keep the swirls in place if I don't band the shirt together... lots of experimenting in store for me! Anyway, I just wanted to share my results!

waves

I wonder how to create waves in a circle to represent flower petals for a sunflower mandala on a 44x44 in. sheet of cotton...

I think you're right

That would really connect the waves to the blue background. I like the look of those waves. I'm just beginning to dye again after the winter, so I'll give it a try.

or maybe split bottom parts in two

I was thinking after "shooting" that idea in a hurry as I was almost leaving from computer.
Maybe that red and yellow areas should be each splitted in two with red e.g. on the left side and yellow on the right. (So each "tongue" will be the same, twocolored)

I think I've got it - or something

AFter many months of playing with this "triple spiral" fold, I think I'm getting the hang of it.

The beginning was this shirt I saw at Twisted Tie-Dye The Edge Tie Dye.

After I asked on this forum how to do this pattern, there was some discussion about whether it was ethical for me to try and "steal" this design. Rest assured, nothing I did resulted in a duplicate of the shirt for sale. But what I did get I like even better, and it was an amazing learning process.

One of my favorite results is what I call my "Flame wave"

I leave the corners of the t-shirt free rather than wrapping them around the edges of the triple spiral (as was done for the T-shirt at The Edge Tie Dye), because I like the more symmetrical pattern.

If you don't want to fuss with the time needed to apply the dye in the "wedge" pattern I used above, you can get some cool effects by just doing horizontal stripes parallel to a line drawn through all three spiral centers

Finally, you even get some cool looks with just a two-tone color scheme:

Thanks for everyone's ideas on this.

How to keep the swirls in place?

I just posted some pix about an attempt I made at this pattern by banding the shirt around the swirls. I'm curious about how you kept your swirls in place if you didn't band the rest of the shirt around them? Can you take pix of the shirt folded or dyed before you wash out next time you do this one?
Thanks!

Can you show us the fold you did for the shirt in the middle

Hoe did you fold it to get the spirals to be s even & concentric? And how did you dye the some they came out even?
Thanks!

Great!

I like the one in the middle most! Thanks for sharing.

These are wonderful.

These are wonderful. Thanks for posting those pictures!

Please correct the name of the artist

Paula - I've discovered that I erroneously identified the inspiration for my triple spirals as being from "Twisted Tie-Dye" when the shirt was actually done by "The Edge Tie Dye". I'm sorry to have made this mistake, but I was wondering if you can fix it by editing my postings and replacing "Twisted Tie-Dye" with "The Edge Tie Dye"?

changed

Okay, changed. And, I found the site for The Edge Tie Dye.
