just curious-- what happens when...

Paula, you seem to have tried everything so I'm asking....What happens when you use LWI on a traditional tie-dye spiral pattern? Does anyone have any examples out there? I'm curious about the effects. Should I bother doing this or will I be unhappy with the results?

thanks,
Lauren

LWI Swirl

I decided to try LWI on a double swirl awhile back, and here's how it turned out:

I would suggest using compatible colors if you try it, to avoid the muddy effect you would get otherwise.

LWI on tied pattern

Unless your main point is to get the white patterns that are made by tying the string very tightly, as in traditional immersion tie-dyeing, it doesn't work really well in LWI. To get the full spiral effect, you have to apply the dye in those wedge-shaped sections, so that when the spiral fold untwists, the colors of the wedges twist into the spiral shape. If you just drip the dye on fairly haphazardly, as I usually do in LWI, the spiral design comes out very vague and muddled. The best ties to combine with LWI are the ones that don't rely a great deal on color placement. I often do fold a garment as though for tie-dyeing, but then instead of tying, I usually jam it tightly into a bucket or bowl for LWI.
