How to fold for a rectangle center?

I would like to have a rectangle in the center of the shirt before I dye. Do I need to make a vertical and then a horizontal fold and then draw essentially 1/4 of the rectangle and then pleat to get a straight line? Or should I be looking to do an angular fold and then draw on the rectangle? I am considering this on a hanes beefy t shirt to the material will be very thick if it is double folded. Any thought on how to do this effectively? I have a picture to transfer iron on into the rectangle.

rectangle sewn?

Another way how to achieve rectangle is to use running stitch - wide spacing is enough, just make sure to stick the needle exactly into each the corner, when sewing corners. Draw the thread, don't have to be extremely tight - be careful not to break the thread. You can tie string around it to secure it and then you can dye it.

Is this that you want to achieve?

I would fold it in half, draw

I would fold it in half, draw half a rectangle, and then pleat to get a straight line. I haven't tried this myself, but I've used the technique to make circles quite successfully. You might also consider just drawing the rectangle on an un-folded shirt and doing it that way, if you are worried about dye penetration.

Give it a try on one shirt, or a T-shirt if you want to practice before doing something more expensive. T-shirts are about $3 apiece from Dharma Trading Co,so cheap enough and easy to practice on.
