We are trying to tie dye a mickey mouse head. I am doing a basting stitch along to outline of his head. I pull the floss tight and rubber band tightly just below the floss. The dye always seems to run somewhere and my mouse head is misshapen. Please help.

Are you using a thickener, such as alginate, in your dye?

(You're using Procion MX type dye, right?)

We are using Procion dye from Dharma, and no we are not using a thickener. As we just started dyeing, I did not know about thickeners.

That will be your next step, then, for your mouse head shapes. Thickeners are just what you need for those times when you don't want the dye to spread as far. Here's a link to my page about dye thickeners:

Sodium alginate, Superclear, and other dye thickeners

You'll probably want to order it from Dharma. They sell "high viscosity" alginate for use on cotton. Order some water softener while you're at it, sodium hexametaphosphate, because alginate can combine with the calcium ions in even moderately hard water to form a gel, which is something you don't want to happen in your dye bottles.
