ProChem Liquid Remazol LR604 discontinued

LR604 has been discontinued by ProChem and replaced by Black LR605. LR605 is C.I. reactive dye #5. I've just bought some and dyed some fabric at an 8% DOS and discovered it is not black at all, but blue.

When I looked at the data sheet for the old LR604, I discovered that is actually was a mix of CI reactive black #5 and CI reactive orange 107. I have used this ProChem branded remazol liquid for batik for years and have been so happy with it. I was able to get wonderful dark blacks and a wide range of greys with no weird separation of colors.
Now what??

As far as I know, the old LR604 was the only nearly pure black out there. If anyone has suggestions for other single hue blacks, I'd appreciate it. I'll even consider a good premixed grey if someone really loves a mixture from ProChem. I guess my other alternative would be to try and mix my own grey.

Thanks in advance,

Liquid Reactive LR604 remazol

That's very interesting, Sarah. Thanks for posting about it.

It seems to me that the identity of the orange in LR604 was never made clear before. In fact, while at first I wondered whether there was an orange dye besides the dark navy in LR604, and mentioned in my Remazol dye chart that "some versions might also contain a tiny quantity of an unidentified dye", I then gradually forgot all about it, since the LR604 mixture acted so nicely as though it were a single-color dye instead of a mixture. I've been thinking of LR604 for some time as though it were a single-color unmixed dye, it acted so much like one!

Colour Index reactive orange 107 must be very similar in rates of reaction and molecular weight to reactive black 5, since it didn't give halos or color mottling in LWI when they were mixed.

I wonder whether reactive orange 107 may have become less readily available. With the Procion MX dyes we have seen problems caused by a specific dye's being discontinued by a major manufacturer, forcing our suppliers to reformulate their colors. For example, the manufacturer's mix black MX-CWNA was reformulated by Dharma, and the equivalent ProChem 608 was temporarily replaced by the new mixture 609, when one of its constituents was unavailable for a time; I think that it was brown MX-5BR (reactive brown 10, formerly sold by Jacquard Products as their brown rose, which is now a mixture).

Looking at my page of Remazol dyes, I see that I listed reactive orange 107 as Golden Yellow RNL, which is available from Kraftkolour in Australia (or at least it was). That's not the same name as either of the oranges that ProChem is now selling among their liquid reactive dyes.

I wonder what orange Dylon uses in their Permanent black dye, which contains reactive black 5. (A picture is included in my post "Black Dyes: mixtures and single-color blacks".) It has that same nice neutral black effect, but it's not convenient for your use since it has all the auxiliary chemicals mixed in already for a specific amount of water, and of course it's way more expensive per unit of fiber it can dye since it is prepackaged for a single use.

We'll need to test various orange reactive dyes to see if any of them are free of haloing when used with reactive black 5.

Liquid Reactive LR604 remazol

Yes, it is really maddening when one of my "workhorse dyes" gets replaced! Earlier this year I searched in vain for Brown MX-GRN which has also been discontinued.

The Black Reactive #5 might work well at higher than 8% DOS as a black, but I'm not sure. ProChem is describing it as Bluish Black. At 8%, it came out as a dark slate blue. Doing a quick internet search, this seems to be a widely used dye -- lots of dye manufacturers in India seem to make it.

Thanks for the info about Orange 107. I also found it at American Dyestuffs Corporation, but I doubt if I can get it in small quantities, but I'm going to check and keep looking for other sources.

Thanks for all your help as usual Paula!

Sarah

I am in the process of trying various combinations of MX powdered dyes to achieve a nice gray for solid immersion dyeing. Hopefully I can come up with a decent substitute.

Procion black

As far as a solid neutral gray Procion MX mixture is concerned, have you tried the ProChem PRO MX 609 Deep Black? I think it's pretty neutral at every depth of shade, though only for solid colors. I don't like it as much for a black for tie-dyeing.

another question about vinyl sulphon

Dear Paula and everyone else,

has anyone tried the Black Jacquard vinyl sulphon liquid dye sold by Dharma? Anyone know what its CI number is? It is listed as Black N, but that doesn't mean anything to me. Thanks.

black Jacquard Vinyl Sulphon dye

The black Jacquard Vinyl Sulphon liquid dye is a mixture. No idea what's in it. Its properties are quite different from the old PLR LR604, in that its lightfastness has been listed as "very poor" when that for LR604 was listed as "fairly good".

Here's a chart with best guesses as to Colour Index names for Jacquard Vinyl Sulphon and ProChem Liquid Reactive Remazol dyes:
