Twine for tying fabric surprised some of first batch were pretty good

I did have a failure due to rubber bands folding the flat fabric into a hot dog bun. I should not have dyed the shirt and moved to another one but chalk that one up to learning. That swirl was the worst but "there is no bad tie dye." So I purchased some polypropelene purple twine. I can understand why one would not want to use cotton because of the dye. I think this will be ok since it does not seen to bleed in hot soapy water. I know that the color is added to the resin so I don't think it should bleed.
Anyone use this twine? Also is there an alternative to synthropal for the wash out? I have used two loads and already used 1/3 of the bottle. Maybe using too much. Thanks need to go to work.

Swirls

Releaf

We use artificial sinew for all of our tying except swirls. For swirls, we wrap the outside of the swirled shirt with fat masking tape and just draw the pie lines on with a washable highlighter. Works great!

I like the masking tape idea.

I like the masking tape idea. The polyprolene twine I bought will not work--too limp. I found the waxed version on dharma after i placed my order but I got the huge spool. I can always find other uses.

Twine vs rubber bands

I only use rubber bands on my swirls, and that's because I like to have the segments evenly divided and rubber bands are easier for me to do that. I'm surprised that you had trouble with them on your swirls... were you doubling them up or using them just slipped over the folded shirt? And for all other ties, I use cotton string or sinew, but your twine should do just fine.
As for the synthrapol, I generally use 4 capfuls per load of laundry, which is about 2 ounces.

I just slipped the rubber ban

I just slipped the rubber band over without doubling and the swirl got folded into a hot dog bun. So cotton thread would also be OK. I guess I need weaker rubber bands. Thanks

look a little muddy

I wonder if I needed to rinse more. The shirts look a little muddy on the yellow after the first wash. Maybe the t shirt quality not as good--got them Jerseez on sale. Should I be using different t shirts??

Are you batching the projects

Are you batching the projects on thick newspaper that absorbs a lot of the excess dye?

Do you always wait for the longest day of the year and then miss it?

How hot is your rinse water?

How hot is your rinse water? it might just need to be hotter. 140°F is good, and it's standard tap water temperature. Lots of times people turn their water heaters down low so children don't scald themselves, though.

Hotter water removes unwanted dye more efficiently. Some people pour boiling water over their clothes dyed with fiber reactive dye (including Procion dye). Don't try this with all-purpose dye or acid dye! It works great with fiber reactive dye.

Jerzees tees should be fine if they are 100% cotton and are not stain-resistant. If they are 50% polyester, the colors will be dimmer, as well as paler.

As Judy says, you don't need to use very much Synthrapol per load. It only takes a little to aid wash-out of excess dye. It's okay to use ordinary laundry detergent, though. See my page about Synthrapol.

Laundry detergent without any

Laundry detergent without any fabric softener I assume. Good write on the synthrapol I might add. What about using dish detergent like dawn or the numerous knockoffs? Is there any detergent to specifically avoid?
thanks

I know you can't shower with

I know you can't shower with this water and you cant put your hand in it either. Looked better this morning and I did another wash.

Muddy colors

You might just have some vagrant dye still present on the shirt, and another wash in hot water followed by a good rinse may remove it. Generally, if I'm laundering shirts with a lot of color in the blue/green/purple range, I try to do a double rinse to ensure I have removed all or most of the excess dyes.
