Suppose I wanted to make up a quick bottle of dye for a one time shot using soda ash mixed right in the dye. How much soda ash should I add for 8 oz bottle?
A dry teaspoon should be more than enough.

Yes, a dry teaspoon should work. Michael Fowler's recipe calls for two teaspoons per liter, so that would be half a teaspoon per 8-ounce cup of dye mixed for tie-dyeing, but with soda ash you can do fine with using half as much or twice as much as the recipe says. It's rather forgiving.
