color equivalent questions

Hello everyone! :)
I hav equestion about colour equivalent. I am trying to dye cotton, but once I have solid colours effect, another time - not. I would like to understood from what its depends.
I pin photo, where you can see in right corner bright colours (that part was external), and other part is pallid. Once I had dyed quite big piece of cotton, and colour tone was same in whole matterial (you can see it in second photo). So, maybe anyone know, from what it's depends?

Thanks a lot in advance! :)

well, I was thinking about effects from water softness or something, because matterial is the same, and it was holded in the same way...
this evening I am going to explore it and check your suggestion! ciao:)

getting dye inside folds of fabric

How you fold the fabric makes a big difference in whether all of the fabric gets an equal amount of dye. If you wrap the fabric around and around, so that one part is completely hidden inside another part of the fabric, you will get more of a difference between sections of the fabric. If you fold the fabric back and forth, like an accordion fold, than the dye will be able to penetrate more evenly. For example, here is a drawing I made some years ago to demonstrate how to fold the fabric for a design similar to your first one:

As you apply the dye, you should use your fingers, protected by gloves, to poke inside the folds to look to make sure that the dye is getting all the way through the fabric. This is very important.

Less importantly, what kinds of dyes were you using? Some dyes penetrate more easily inside a bundle of tied fabric, while others are much less apt to soak all the way through. Thinner fabrics also make it easier for the dye to penetrate, while thicker fabrics can be harder for the dye to penetrate.
