Butter Yellow

I need to dye several yards of cotton fabric for a weaving project a nice "butter yellow" color. Both the Procion clear yellow and golden yellow seem close but not quite. I'm concerned the clear yellow will be more of a sun yellow and the golden yellow will be too dark. Would adding some ivory color to the mix help tone down either of those colors or???
I have not tried any experimenting on my own yet in hopes that someone on the forum might have some advice or experience.
Any help or suggestions would be welcome.
Thanks!

butter yellow

butterI think what you want is a dilute golden yellow. Butter is colored naturally with beta-carotene from the cow's food, or by adding annatto, a food dye obtained from achiote trees. Both of these are orange in color, if the color is strong enough. Butter is a pale yellow only because only a small amount of coloring is present in it.

I strongly, strongly encourage you to dye something that is similar in color to your cotton fabric first, as a test, maybe a t-shirt, or better yet a test swatch of your fabric. You'll need to decide what dye concentration to use. The only time you should dye something without pre-testing the color is when you don't mind exactly what color you end up with.

Before you try ordering your dye for test-dyeing, play with Olli Niemitalo's Dye Mixer Applet, at http://iki.fi/o/dye/dyemixer/. Compare the color you get by adjusting the color strength downward for a lemon yellow, as compared to a golden yellow. Orange MX-2R is definitely way too close to red to work, though.

By the way, which dye supplier are you talking about? You always have to specify that, in any post that refers to pre-mixed dye color names, since pre-mixed colors vary so much from one supplier to another. "Clear yellow" is not used for any of the single-hue unmixed Procion MX dyes anywhere, as far as I know, and "golden yellow" is the name Dharma uses for yellow MX-GRN, while ProChem uses "goden yellow" for an entirely different dye, yellow MX-3RA. Here's a link to my page of Which Procion MX colors are pure, and which mixtures?. It's fine to use a particular company's catalog names, as long as you tell us which company it is.

Butter Yellow

Thanks for the info. Paula. I did not realize the dye supplier would make such a difference, that's good to know. My color reference was using Dharma Trading Companies web site which seems to offer the largest number of options. I assumed that if it was a Procion dye that they were selling as opposed to a ProChem that they would be the same no matter what company catalog I ordered from. I would prefer to order from Halcyon Yarn as I have some other items to order from them but their yellow options are only Lemon Yellow which I doubt would work or Bright Golden Yellow. But now I'm wondering if Halcyon's BGY is the same as Dharma's GY?
One way or other it looks like I'll e doing some dye samples. At least you've headed me in the right direction with the diluted Golden Yellow.
Thanks!
